Hope-Calvin Women's Basketball Rivalry

Since women's basketball became an official MIAA sport in 1978-79, Calvin leads the series by 50-49.

Since 2000, Hope holds a 35-15 series advantage.

Through 121 games, Calvin leads the all-time series 71-50.

The teams have combined to win or share 29 of the 40 MIAA championships through 2017-18. 

The Hope/Calvin women's basketball rivalry started in 1965 with a 49-35 Calvin victory.

The teams have been to the NCAA tournament a combined 35 times, 19 by Hope and 16 by Calvin. Hope's best NCAA finish was winning the national championship in 1990 and 2006 while Calvin's best has been playing in the sectional finals three times (2005, 2007 and 2012). Both teams have advanced to the NCAA tournament in the same year on multiple occasions (1998, 1999, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017), but they've never met. Hope is 34-16 in NCAA games, while Calvin is 17-14.

The teams have played each other 18 times in the MIAA Tournament since 1993. Hope has a 10-8 advantage. The teams have met in the MIAA Tournament championship game 10 times with Hope winning seven -- 59-43 in 1995, 73-71 in overtime in 1998, 63-44 in 2006, 71-68 in 2007, 68-49 in 2010, 62-59 in 2013 and 88-79 in 2014. Calvin won the 2015 game 77-73, the 2012 game 65-43 and the 2011 game 67-65.

Hope coach Brian Morehouse is 37-22 in games against Calvin since 1996-97. Calvin coach Chuck Winkelman is 1-5 against Hope.

Calvin's longest winning streak in the series was 22 games (1965-79) and the longest by Hope was nine (2000-04).

The most points by Hope in a game against Calvin was 89-51 in 2003. Calvin's most points was 88-77 in 2016. The most points by both teams in a game was in Hope's 88-81 win in November 2013.

The fewest points by Hope in a game against Calvin was in a 73-19 loss in 1975. The fewest points by Calvin was in a 28-25 win in 1967.

Hope's biggest margin of victory was 38 points (89-51) in 2003. Calvin's biggest margin of victory was 54 points (73-19) in 1975.

Four games have gone into overtime, Hope winning 55-53 in 1995, Calvin 63-58 in 2007, Hope winning 63-55 in 2017 and Hope winning 63-58 in 2018 (MIAA Tournament Semi-Final).

Thirty-one of the games have been decided by five or fewer points with Calvin holding a 18-14 advantage. In one-point games, Calvin leads 3-1 (59-58 in 1981, 61-60 in 1984 and 56-55 in 2011; Hope 70-69 in 2018).

Six of the all-time NCAA Division III women's basketball single-game attendance marks have been Hope/Calvin games. The largest DeVos Fieldhouse crowd was 3,443 on February 16, 2013 when Hope won 65-60. The largest at Calvin's Van Noord Arena was on February 21, 2009 (3,175), also a Hope win, 65-50. 

Karla Wolters, Hope Class of 1973 and a member of the Hope College Kinesiology faculty (1987-2010), coached Calvin to the 1979 MIAA championship. She was 3-0 in games she coached her Calvin teams against Hope from 1977-79.
