Guard Chad Carlson packed a wallop from 3-point range for the Hope College men's basketball team in a "Throwback Game' at Olivet College Wednesday.
The Flying Dutchmen needed every one of his record-setting 10 3-pointers and career-high 30 points to remain unbeaten in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play with a 93-88 victory.
Hope (16-4 overall, 9-0 MIAA) extended its lead in the league standings to three games after Albion knocked off second-place Calvin.
The game was played at Olivet's Upton Center — the Comets' old home court from 1982-2008.
Carlson surpassed the previous Hope record of eight made 3-pointers shared by Kyle VanderWall in an 86-78 win vs. Adrian in 2001 and Daane Griffeth in a 106-74 win vs. Tri-State (now Trine) in 2005.
The senior guard from Rockford, Michigan (Rockford HS) helped the Flying Dutchmen take advantage of Olivet's focus on defending senior forward Harrison Blackledge of Canton, Ohio (Hoover) and sank a season-high 17 3-pointers. The school record is 21.
Carlson shot 10-of-17 from the field — all his shots came from 3-point range. He also shared team-high honors with five assists.
Carlson is the eighth men's basketball player in NCAA Division III to make at least 10 3-pointers in a game this season. The national high is 15.
In the first half alone, Carlson made seven 3-pointers and staked the Flying Dutchmen to a 47-42 halftime lead. Hope never relinquished the lead.
"What we witnessed tonight out of Chad was pretty special. He was obviously feeling it, and our guys were collectively and consciously finding him," Hope coach Greg Mitchell said. "I'm proud of the savvy our team played with in recognizing where the ball needed to go. Chad will be the first to tell you that his record-breaking night was really a "team" record.
"It's not easy to get 17 quality 3-point attempts off, let alone knock down. He's shooting with such confidence right now. He's quite a weapon for us."
Olivet pulled as close as three points with 46 seconds remaining, but junior guard Dante Hawkins of Holland, Michigan (Holland) buried two free throws 16 seconds later to finish off the Comets (8-12, 4-5 MIAA).
Hawkins chipped in 20 points and five assists. He went 12-of-16 from the foul line.
Senior forward Cody Stuive of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) chipped in 13 points.
Senior guard Mitchell O'Brien of Manteno, Illinois (Bishop McNamara) added 12 points off the bench.
The Flying Dutchmen matched their season-high with 21 assists.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 with a 3 p.m. game at Alma.
