Chad Carlson '03 rejoined the Hope College Men's Basketball staff in 2014 to be the Flying Dutchmen's junior varsity coach. He is an associate professor in Hope's kinesiology department.
Carlson played basketball for the Flying Dutchmen for four years and served as team captain during the 2002-03 and 2001-02 seasons. He scored 1,034 points during his Hope career while earning All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association honors during the 2001-02 season. The Flying Dutchmen were MIAA champions in 2003.
Carlson previously coached at Hope between 2003-06. He played professional basketball for the Grand Rapids Flight and Holland Blast teams of the International Basketball League in 2005 and 2006. He served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Penn State-Altoona during the 2010-11 season.
Carlson was a multi-sport standout at Holland High School. He earned 10 varsity letters in soccer, basketball and tennis while earning all-conference recognition six times and all-state honors three times.
Carlson is married to Kathi (Grotenhuis), a 2003 Hope graduate who played softball and basketball for the Flying Dutch. The couple has two children: Brielle and Bryce.
