Coach Jeff Carlson (’06) began coaching basketball for his alma mater in the 2010-11 school year. He has been a varsity assistant, junior varsity head coach and junior varsity assistant.
Hailing from Holland, Carlson was a decorated athlete in three sports at Holland High School and went on to be an accomplished two-sport athlete while at Hope.
Carlson teaches high school social studies and English at Zeeland West High School, where he is also the boys varsity tennis coach at Zeeland West. He has a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Grand Valley State University.
Carlson and his wife, Shawna (’06), are the proud parents of three children: Peyton, Myles and Kierstyn.
While playing at Hope, Carlson was a four-year member of the varsity team. As a freshman, he was named to the NCAA Division III All-Freshmen First Team. He was a Second Team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection that same year and an All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection his senior year. He captained the team as both a junior and senior. In the fall of 2005, he again walked onto the soccer pitch and played two years of soccer at Hope. He was captain of the 2006 team.
Carlson has helped Hope to have more presence in the Chicago and northern Indiana area, tapping into storied programs from these areas. JC, as he is often referred, highlights his opportunity to play on the Hope team with his older brother Chad (’02) as a memorable moment.
