Gunnar Elder Ties Assist Record, Men's Lacrosse Surges Past Calvin

The Rivalry had Gunnar Elder in a generous mood for the Hope College men's lacrosse team.

The senior attacker from East Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids) tied a school record with eight assists during a 16-9 win at Calvin on Tuesday that raised the Flying Dutchmen's record to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Elder, pictured, equaled the 2014 mark of eight assists by Jacob Kamstra against Centenary on March 18, 2014.

Six of Elder's assists came after halftime and Hope outscored the Knights 11-4 during the second half.

Elder set up freshmen Max Kuiper of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Central) and Rocco Mularoni of Hartland, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central) for goals 29 seconds apart within the first 44 seconds of the second half that snapped a 5-5 tied.

Mularoni topped the Flying Dutchmen in the match with four goals.

Kuiper and senior Zach Weber of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) chipped in three goals apiece.

Kuiper also totaled five assists.

Hope's 14 assists tied for the fourth-most in a single game in team history.

The victory was the Flying Dutchmen's second against Calvin this season. The Knights fell to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in MIAA play.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, April 15 with a noon match at Kalamazoo.
