Hope Men's Soccer Ties Allegheny To Close Bergsma Memorial Tournament

The Hope College men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie with Allegheny (Pa.) on Saturday night in the season-opening Bergsma Memorial Tournament.

The Flying Dutchmen finished the two-day tournament with a 0-1-1 record.

Oberlin (Ohio) is Bergsma champion after going undefeated, including a 2-1 win against Hope on Friday. Allegheny finished 1-0-1 after beating Concordia (Mich.) on Friday.

Midfielder Gavin Midlam, pictured at left, gave Hope a 1-0 lead against Allegheny 1 minute, 58 seconds into the second half. He headed a shot from 12 yards out past Allegheny goalie John Lichina. The first goal of the season for the junior from East Lansing came off an assist from junior back Corey Stelk of Betendorf, Iowa (Pleasant Valley).

Allegheny evened the score at 1-1 in the 64th minute on Cameron Olsom's first goal of the season.

The two teams then finished regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods without scoring in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 775.

Hope goalie Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) totaled five saves in his first start of the season.

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 4 when they host Madonna University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
