Three unanswered goals made the 2016 home debut for the Hope College men's soccer team a successful one.
The Flying Dutchmen overcame an early deficit to claim a 3-1 win against Grace Bible College on Wednesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Hope (1-2 overall) scored twice before halftime after Grace Bible (1-2) struck in the 30th minute for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Devon Butler of New Baltimore, Michigan (Anchor Bay HS) evened the score in the 36th minute with his second goal of the season. Junior Josh Hagene of Caledonia, Michigan (East Kentwood HS) recorded his second assist of the season.
Sophomore Ben Hagman of Powell, Ohio (Olentangy Liberty), pictured at right, put the Flying Dutchmen ahead for good 31 seconds before halftime. His first goal of the season came off an assist from sophomore James Reymann of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne).
Hope tacked on an insurance goal in the 62nd minute. Junior David White of Vernon Hills, Illinois (Vernon Hills) netted his first goal of the season with an unassisted tally.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium with the annual Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. Hope hosts Aurora, Illinois on Friday at 7 p.m. and Benedictine, Illinois on Saturday at 7 p.m.
