Jordan Ernst scored his first two goals of the season as the Hope College men's soccer team claimed a 5-1 win at Trine on Saturday.
The freshman from Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids) upped Hope's lead to 2-0 by scoring his first goal with one second remaining in the half. It was unassisted.
Ernst struck again with 26:34 remaining in the second half to push the Flying Dutchmen ahead 4-0.
Hope improved to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.
Sophomore Christian Dault of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven) opened the scoring with 27:35 left in the first half on a header from a cross from sophomore Jared Wondergem of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville).
Sophomore Steve Binnig of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (North Allegheny) and freshman Heriberto De Leon of Long Beach, California (Paramount) chipped in second-half goals against Trine (0-13-2, 0-10 MIAA). Sophomore James Reymann of Columbus, Ohio (Worthington Kilbourne had the assist on Binnig's goal.
Reymann assisted on Binnig's goal. Sophomore Colin Bennett of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) assisted on De Leon's.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 vs. Adrian at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. The 7 p.m. match is part of Purple Community doubleheader to benefit Van Andel Institute's biomedical research and science education.
