Men's Swimming & Diving Takes First In Five Events, Falls To Calvin

The Hope College men's swimming & diving team swept the top three spots in two events during a 165-123 dual meet loss at Calvin on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen recorded the best three performances in 1-meter diving and the 200-yard backstroke.

Sophomore Brian Simonich of Highland, Michigan (Milford HS) led the divers with a 1-meter score of 266.3 points. Senior Jean Luc Miralda of Tegucigalpa, Honduras (American) finished second (250.60), while junior Kevin Franz of Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein) came in third (226.40).

Miralda won 3-meter diving by posting a score of 295.55.

Hope went 1-2-3 in the 200 backstroke: junior Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) at 2:00.12, senior Christian Otteman of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East) at 2:00.86, and senior Dan Sullivan of Columbus, Ohio (Upper Arlington) at 2:03.73.

The Flying Dutchmen finished first and second in the 200 breaststroke: sophomore Josh Meade of Kentwood, Michigan (East Kentwood) at 2:20.63 and senior Trevor Wagoner of Hixson, Tennessee (McCalle) at 2:21.06.

Junior Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic) won the 200 butterfly at 1:57.58.

Hope's next meet is Saturday, Jan 14 at the Michigan-Illinois Quad at Lake Forest, Illinois.
