Men's Swimming & Diving Opens MIAA Championship In Third Place

The Hope College men's swimming & diving team took third in the 800-meter freestyle relay to open the 2017 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships on Wednesday at Holland Community Aquatic Center.

Junior Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS), freshman Daniel Clyde of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Huron), senior Christian Otteman of Zeeland, Michigan (East), and junior Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) posted a time of 7 minutes, 0.58 seconds.

The Flying Dutchmen are third in the overall standings after one day with 32 points. Albion (40) is first and followed by Calvin (34), Hope, Kalamazoo (30), Olivet (28) and Alma (26).

Three Hope divers placed in the top six of the 1-meter preliminaries.

Senior Jean Luc Miralda of Tegucigalpa, Honduras (American) came in fourth with a score of 443.65 points.

Sophomore Brian Simonich of Highland, Michigan (Milford) took fifth with 423.45 points. Junior Kevin Franz of Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein) was sixth with 417.0.

The four-day meet resumes on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. with preliminaries. The evening's finals start at 5:30 p.m.
