Men's Swimming & Diving Wins Two Events, Places Runner-Up At Meet

Charlie Emmert and Jeff Engle both claimed victories for the Hope College men's swimming & diving team at the Michigan-Illinois Quad on Saturday at Holland Community Aquatic Center.

They helped the Flying Dutchmen to a runner-up score of 469 points in the four-team event.

Emmert took first in the 200-yard butterfly. The senior from Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS) posted a swim of 1 minute, 59.10 seconds.

Engle won the 500 freestyle. The junior from Kalamazoo, Michigan (Home School) clocked a time of 5 minutes, 4.31 seconds.

Emmert also clocked a runner-up 50 freestyle effort of 22.07 seconds — the Flying Dutchmen's best time in the event this season.

Senior Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) came in second in the 200 backstroke with a swim of 2:00.55.

Divers Brian Simonich and Kevin Franz went 2-3 in both 1- and 3-meter diving.

Simonich recorded a 1-meter score of 273.55 points. The junior from Highland, Michigan (Milford) had a 3-meter total of 248.20 points.

Franz posted a 1-meter score of 263.80 points. The senior from Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein) had a 3-meter total of 232.95 points.

Sophomore Daniel Clyde of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Huron) placed third in the 100 freestyle at 49.86 seconds.

The 400 freestyle relay of Emmert, senior Joseph Watson of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central), Wurster, and Clyde took third in 3;15.59.

Wheaton, Illinois won the meet with 615 points. Hope finished ahead of third-place Kalamazoo (424) and fourth-place Lake Forest, Illinois (364).
