Men's Swimming & Diving Sinks Olivet On Senior Day

Three seniors contributed first-place performances for the Hope College men's swimming & diving team during a 119-92 Senior Day victory against Olivet on Friday.

Senior Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic) went the fastest in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a swim of 10 minutes, 29.24 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:05.32.

Senior Joseph Watson of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central) led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Flying Dutchmen in the 100-yard freestyle by clocking a time of 50.89 seconds.

Senior Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) went 1:51.60 in the 200 freestyle for first place.

The Flying Dutchmen won seven events.

Junior Brian Simonich of Highland, Michigan (Milford) swept diving, including an NCAA Division III regional qualifying 3-meter effort of 296.55 points. He took first on the 1-meter board with a score of 273.30 points.

Sophomore Daniel Clyde of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Huron) and junior Jeff Engle of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Homeschool) finished 1-2 in the 100 butterfly by posting times of 55.16 and 57.34 seconds.

The Flying Dutchmen honors six seniors before the meet: swimmers Brian Brown of Lemont, Illinois (Brother Rice), Emmert, Watson and Wurster, and divers Kevin Franz of Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein) and Kyle Weck of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall).
