Men's Swimming & Diving Wins 10 Events, Tops Alma

Diver Brian Simonich and swimmer Charlie Emmert both won two events as the Hope College men's swimming & diving team defeated Alma College 135-52 on Saturday.

The visiting Flying Dutchmen won their third Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet in four tries this season.

Simonich, pictured at right, took first in 3-meter diving with a season-best score of 314.45 points. The junior from Highland, Michigan (Milford HS) recorded a winning 1-meter diving total of 272.60 points.

Emmert, a senior from Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic), clocked the fastest times in the 100 backstroke at 57.03 seconds and the 200 freestyle at 1:50.32.

Junior Jeff Engle of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Homeschool) won the 500 freestyle in 5:08.31.

Engle swam the anchor leg of the victorious 200 medley relay. He and sophomore Seth Costello of Williamston, Michigan (Williamston), sophomore Gus Dellacqua of Bloomington, Indiana (North) and sophomore Keon Rick of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) had a time of 1:48.75.

Senior Joseph Watson of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central) won the 50 freestyle in 23.93 seconds.

Sophomore Daniel Clyde of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Huron) took first in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:24.78.

Senior Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) clocked the top 100 freestyle time of the meet at 51.31 seconds.

Sophomore Skylar De La Torre of St. Joseph, Michigan (Stevensville-Lakeshore) posted a winning men's 1,000 freestyle time of 10:51.27.
