The Hope College men's swimming and diving team wrapped up their 2018 season at the MIAA Championships on Saturday night with a third-place league finish.
The Flying Dutchmen ended the meet with a total of 483 points.
Host Calvin College was tied with Albion College for first place going into the meet's final event — the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Knights beat the Britons by a half second in that event and claimed the overall league title with 934.5 points. Albion took second place with 928.5 while Olivet College had 246 and Alma College 185.
Senior Charlie Emmert (right) of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Powers Catholic HS) and senior Mike Wurster (left) of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) each swam to Hope's best finishes on the night in their respective individual events. Emmert took the bronze in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.83) while Wurster touched the wall in third place in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.82).
Sophomore Daniel Clyde of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Huron HS) finished seventh in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.30.
In the 1650-yard freestyle, senior Brian Brown of Lemont, Illinois (Brother Rice) and junior Jeff Engle of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Home School) came in seventh (17:07.06) and eighth (17:08.22), respectively.
Junior Brian Simonich of Highland, Michigan (Milford HS) earned a fourth-place finish on the three-meter diving board with 450 points while senior Kyle Weck of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS) took the sixth spot with 403.65 points.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Hope team of senior Joseph Watson of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central), Emmert, Wurster, and Clyde clocked in third with a time of 3:08.38.
Consolation heat finishers on Saturday were:
- Junior Trevor Gras of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland West HS) in 11th (1:59.57), sophomore Seth Costello of Williamston, Michigan in 12th (2:02.81), and sophomore Ethan Yau of Chicago, Illinois (Univ II-Chicago College Prep) in 15th (2:06.77) in the 200-yard backstroke;
- Watson in 14th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.77;
- Freshman Timothy Boyce of Rochester, Minnesota (Lourdes HS) in 12th place with a time of 2:23.99 in the 200-yard breaststroke; and,
- Yau in 13th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.39.
