Men's Tennis Tops Trine, Claims Sole Possession Of Second Place In MIAA

The Hope College men's tennis team moved into sole possession of second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings with an 8-1 win at Trine on Wednesday.

The Flying Dutchmen are in a position to earn the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament on Thursday-Friday, May 4-5 with a win against Alma in their regular-season finale next week.

Hope is 8-9 overall and 5-1 in MIAA matches. They lead third-place Adrian and Calvin - both of whom are 4-2 in league play.

Sophomore Michael Kiley of Muskegon, Michigan (Mona Shores) outlasted Spenser Gilbert at No. 1 singles for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

The Flying Dutchmen swept the doubles flights.

The No. 1 pairing of Kiley and sophomore Mark VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) won 8-6.

The other two pairings claimed 8-4 victories: sophomore Andrew Klein of Augusta, Michigan (Kalamazoo Christian) and freshman Danny Kroeze of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) at No. 2, and senior Sam Kreps of Holland, Michigan (Holland) and sophomore Justin Folkert of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton).

Hope hosts Alma on Tuesday, April 25 for a 4 p.m. Senior Day match.
