Sydney Jones retired the first 18 batters she faced before finishing with a one-hit shutout for the Hope College softball team in a 6-0 win against Buena Vista, Iowa on Saturday in Clermont, Florida.
The junior righthander from South Lyon, Michigan (East HS) helped the Flying Dutch rebound from a 6-5, eight-inning loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh earlier in the day and improve to 3-1 overall.
Buena Vista (3-1) ended the perfect game bid by reaching base on an error and a single in the bottom of the seventh.
Jones (2-0) struck out 11 and did not walk a batter for her second shutout in as many days.
The Flying Dutch supported Jones with big hits like first-inning, solo homer from first baseman Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) - her first in college — and three RBI from second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland). Mutschler had a two-run single in the third and a run-scoring double in the seventh.
Against Oshkosh, the Flying Dutch fell in extra innings after Oshkosh (7-2) delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.
Hope tied the score at 5-5 with a three-run fifth that included a RBI single from catcher Hayley Reitsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) and a run-scoring groundout from designated player Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland).
The Flying Dutch return to action on Monday, March 20 with games against Allegheny and Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Clermont, Florida.
