Preseason Outlook For 2013-14 Hope Women's Basketball

The Hope women's basketball team is pursuing back-to-back Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships and NCAA Division III Tournament appearances during the 2013-14 season.

Hope is coming off a 29-2 campaign in which it reached the elite eight for the sixth time in school history and the fourth time in five seasons. It was the Flying Dutch's 13th postseason appearance.

The Flying Dutch also claimed their 13th MIAA championship overall and 11th in 14 seasons by going 15-1 in league play to share first place with Calvin.

Hope has been ranked fourth in the preseason USA Today Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll and ninth in the d3hoops.com national rankings.

Coach Brian Morehouse is entering his 18th season. He ranks third among active NCAA women's basketball coaches in all divisions with a .859 win percentage, joining the likes of Connecticut legend Geno Auriemma, who is second with a .863 mark. Morehouse has a 426-70 record at Hope.

Hope's 2013-14 roster of 15 players features three seniors, six juniors, two sophomores and four freshmen.

Co-captains for this season's teams are senior Megan Kelley of Rockford (Rockford HS) and junior guard Brittany Berry of Grand Rapids (Catholic Central HS).

Berry led all Division III women's basketball players in 3-point shooting accuracy. Berry shot a school-record 51.2 percentage (65-of-127) last season while averaging 7.4 points per game. Kelley scored 4.3 points per game, primarily off the bench.

The Flying Dutch also bring back one more returning starter — junior Hannah Doell of Center Valley, Pa., (Southern Leigh HS) and their top reserve — junior Rebekah Llorens of Grayslake, Ill. (Grayslake Central HS). Llorens is Hope's top returning scorer after averaging 7.6 points last season.

Other returning letterwinners are seniors Anna Kaufmann of Davenport, Iowa (Davenport Central HS) and Kelsey Masserant of Novi (Novi HS), juniors Emily Klauka of Holt (Holt HS), Melissa LaRaeu of Bradley, Ill. (Bishop McNamara HS) and Kamara Sudberry of Clio (Clio HS) and sophomores Autumn Anderson of Dorr (Wayland HS) and Maura McAfee of Midland (Midland HS).

The Flying Dutch tip off the season Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 at the North Central (Ill.) Tournament. Their MIAA opener is Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Calvin.

Hope's home opener is Saturday, Dec. 7 against Alma. The Flying Dutch also host the annual Hope Post-Exam Jam on Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14.

Road action will be highlighted by the RDV SportsPlex Classic in Orlando, Fla., on Friday, Dec. 20 and Saturday, Dec. 21.
