Flying Dutch Start Season At Non-Scoring MIAA Relays

 

The Hope women's swimming & diving team opened the 2013-14 season at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Relays Saturday at Calvin College.

Hope took second in the 200-yard backstroke relay with senior Maria Kieft of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS), freshman Molly Meyer of South Bend, Ind. (John Adams HS), sophomore Sarah Bettag of Mukilteo, Wash. (Archbishop Murphy HS) and sophomore Klare Northuis of Holland (Holland HS) going 1:53.75.

The Flying Dutch were runner-up in 1,500 relay. Freshman Payton Hoff of Clarkson (Pontiac Notre Dame Prep HS), sophomore Lindsay Wiederhold of Plainwell (Plainwell HS) and sophomore Virginia Cotterall of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS) went 16:40.43.

Hope placed second in the 100 backstroke relay as Northuis, sophomore Michelle Hance of Noblesville, Ind., (Noblesville HS), junior Lauren Girard of Rockford (Rockford HS) and sophomore Hannah Larson of Jackson (Jackson HS) finished in 53.43.

The Flying Dutch came in third in the 200 medley relay with Larson, sophomore Jorgie Watson of Grand Rapids (Catholic Central HS), Wiederhold and Northuis going 1:54.56.

Hope took third in the 200 breaststroke relay. Junior Taryn Gras of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS), Hance, Girard and Watson clocked a time of 2:15.25.

The Flying Dutch were third in the 200 butterfly relay. Meyer, senior Bethany Schmall of Portage (Portage Central), sophomore Emily Weber of Milan (Milan HS) and Wiederhold posted a time of 1:53.39.

Hope placed third in the 200 butterfly relay. Schmall, Weber, Meyer and Hoff went 51.29.

The Flying Dutch took third in the 100 freestyle relay as Kieft, Cotterall, freshman Mikalya Freyling of Alto (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) and Weber clocked a time of 47.43.

Hope tied for third in the 200 freestyle relay. Freyling, Larson, Bettag and Hance finished in 1:42.91.
