Two underclassmen led the Hope women's tennis team during the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships that concluded on Monday in Greencastle, Ind.
Sophomore Claire Cooper of Williamston (Williamston HS) and freshman Nancy Benda of Birmingham (Seaholm HS) both won three matches in the championship flight of the three-day tournament before bowing out.
Benda also teamed with junior Carli Capestany of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS) to win three doubles matches together before losing in the championship flight quarterfinals.
Capestany, won one match in the championship flight in singles.
Cooper and senior Mallory Smith of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) won one consolation match in doubles. Garcia and senior Stephanie Huffman of Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Eastern HS) each won a consolation singles match.
The Flying Dutch return to action on Friday when they host the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Flighted Championships Friday and Saturday.
