The fifth-ranked Hope College volleyball cruised to two, three-set wins in its season opener Friday at the Blufflton (Ohio) University Sommer Center Spiketacular on Friday.
The Flying Dutch defeated Bethany (W.V.) 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 in their first match, then topped host Bluffton 25-17, 25-16, 25-11) to close the night.
Hope completes the two-day tournament on Saturday with matches against Marietta (Ohio) at 10 a.m. and Case Western Reserve (Ohio) at 2 p.m.
Against Bethany, freshman outside hitter Sarah Feldpausch of White Cloud (White Cloud HS) led Hope with a match-high 13 kills and a .542 kill percentage. Returning First Team NCAA Division III All-America outside hitter Jenna Grasmeyer of Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS) chipped in 10 kills, while junior middle hitter Amy VanderStoep of Holand (West Ottawa HS) added eight.
Against Bluffton, Grasmeyer netted a match-high 13 kills with a .440 kill percentage. Feldpausch and VanderStoep added seven and six kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport (Fruitport HS) totaled 62 assists over two matches.
"I thought our defense was pretty scrappy," Hope coach Becky Schmidt said. "We started finding a little more of an offensive rhythm as the day went on. Our blocking was something that was very, very strong."
