Lauren Hazekamp has settled in quickly in her first tournament as the starting setter for the nationally ranked Hope College volleyball team.
The sophomore from Fruitport (Fruitport HS) led the No. 5 Flying Dutch to a 4-0 record at the Bluffton (Ohio) University Sommer Center Spiketacular this weekend. Hazekamp earned all-tournament honors in the process.
On Saturday, Hazekamp collected a match-high 33 assists and seven digs during a 25-12, 25-17, 25-13 win against Marietta (Ohio), then followed it with 28 assists and 10 digs in a 25-14, 25-5, 25-17 win against Case Western Reserve (Ohio).
Hazekamp helped feed senior middle hitter Mari Schoolmaster of Portage (Portage Central) for a team-high 11 kills against Marietta. The Flying Dutch hit .286 as a team.
Freshman Sarah Feldpausch of White Cloud (White Cloud HS) topped a balanced effort against Case Western Reserve (2-2) with eight kills. The Flying Dutch hit .292 as a team.
Hazekamp was one of six players to make the all-tournament team. One player from each team in the six-team event was eligible.
Hope returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 3 when it hosts Alma College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams. Alma went 3-1 at the Bluffton Tournament, losing to Case Western Reserve in five sets.
