No. 5-ranked Hope Volleyball Sweeps Trine, Chicago
The fifth-ranked Hope College volleyball team reached eight sweeps in as many matches this season, defeating Trine University and the No. 12 University of Chicago in Saturday matinees at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The Flying Dutch beat Trine 25-9, 25-22, 25-11 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play, then defeated Chicago in nonleague action 25-21, 25-14, 25-19.
Hope is now 8-0 overall on the season and 3-0 in MIAA action. The Flying Dutch have won each of the 24 sets they have played.
Against Chicago, junior Jenna Grasmeyer of Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS) collected a match-high 21 kills with .404 attack percentage. She tied the school record for kills in a three-set match that she reached against Kalamazoo on Oct. 10, 2012. Jacie Fiedler also accomplished the feat vs. St. Norbert (Wis.) on Oct. 16, 2010.
Senior middle hitter Mari Schoolmaster of Portage (Portage Central), junior Anna Lynch of Lake Odessa (Lakewood) and junior hitter Amy VanderStoep each had five kills. Sophomore setter Lauren Hazekamp of Fruitport (Fruitport) totaled 37 kills.
Against Trine, Grasmeyer totaled a match-high 11 kills, while senior middle hitter Courtney Earles of Kentwood (East Kentwood) added eight. Hazekamp had 35 assists.
The Flying Dutch could move up in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III poll is released on Tuesday.
Two other teams in the AVCA Top 5 lost on Friday. Third-ranked Wittenberg (Ohio) fell to No. 21 Pacific Lutheran in three games, while No. 5 Christopher Newport fell to No. 14 Otterbein in four games on Friday. Hope and Christopher Newport shared the fifth spot in the preseason poll.
The Flying Dutch return to action next weekend at the Wittenberg Fall Classic in Ohio.
