The nationally ranked Hope College volleyball team served up a 4-0 start to the 2016 season with two more victories at the Mount Union Purple Raider Classic on Saturday.
The Flying Dutch, ranked 17th in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings, followed up wins against second-ranked Wittenberg, Ohio and SUNY-Geneseo on Friday by downing Bethany, W.V. and John Carroll, Ohio.
Hope put two players on the all-tournament team: senior outside hitter Sarah Feldpausch of White Cloud, Michigan (White Cloud HS) and junior setter Sophia Hackett of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep).
The Flying Dutch closed the day by defeating John Carroll 26-24, 25-22, 25-20 behind 16 kills credited to sophomore Katie Rietberg of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa). Senior middle blocker Courtney Van Houzen of Traverse City, Michigan (Central) chipped in nine kills, while Sarah Feldpausch totaled eight.
Hackett had 21 assists and 14 digs.
In Saturday's first match, the Flying Dutch overcame a 12-hour turnaround between matches to outlast Bethany, W.V. in five sets. Hope won 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 17-15 after a kill from junior Paige Baker of Encinitas, California (La Costa Canyon) and a Bethany hitting error gave the Flying Dutch the final two points.
Rietberg's 14 kills topped Hope. Baker collected 12, while Van Houzen netted 11 and sophomore outside hitter Haley Muller of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) had 10.
Hackett contributed 44 assists and 11 digs.
Hope returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 when the Flying Dutch host Alma for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and home opener on the DeVos Fieldhouse Main Court. Start time is 6:30 p.m.
