2017 HOPEYS Nominees

EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE IN A TEAM SPORT

Presented to the athlete, irrespective of gender, who had the best performance in a team sport in a given year.

Brandan Campbell, Football – In the game at Alma, Campbell rushed for 231 yards and five touchdowns on 29 carries.  He totaled the 10th-most rushing yards in a single game by a Hope player.  The Flying Dutchmen beat Alma 35-19. 

Sydney Jones, Softball – On two separate occasions in the 2016 season, Jones broke the Flying Dutch single game strikeouts record.  In the game at Kalamazoo, Jones struck out 12 batters for a complete-game shutout and 2-0 victory for Hope.  Two and a half weeks later at Adrian, she broke her own record with 14 strikeouts, en route to a 5-1 complete-game victory for the Flying Dutch.  She continues to better her own record this spring as she struck out 17 batters against Adrian on April 1, 2017. 

Elizabeth Perkins, Women’s Soccer and Women’s Basketball – Playing on the road at Olivet, Perkins scored three goals and had one assist in a 7-2 victory for Hope women’s soccer; Coming off the bench for the Flying Dutch basketball team, Perkins scored 28 points and led Hope to a 82-61 victory over Calvin in the opening game of the MIAA season.

Gunnar Elder, Men’s Lacrosse – Elder had six assists and scored six goals for the Flying Dutchmen in an 18-14 win on the road at Adrian.  This victory was the first win over Adrian in men’s lacrosse since becoming a varsity sport in 2013.

Cody Stuive, Men’s Basketball – In the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament against Washington University in St. Louis, Stuive scored a career-high 37 points, shooting 10-for-11 from behind the 3-point line.  Stuive also led the team in rebounds (7), blocks (4), and steals (3) in a 94-80 victory for the Flying Dutchmen.
