Zach Telfor has been selected as the 2017-18 recipient of the Otto van der Velde Award as Hope College's top male student-athlete.
The Otto van der Velde award has been presented since 1932 to a senior man for outstanding contribution to the college in athletics, scholarship, and participation in student activities.
The award is named in memory of Dr. Otto van der Velde, a 1915 Hope College graduate who lettered in four sports and was later team physician for more than 40 years.
A football student-athlete, Telfor recorded a team-high 8 ½ sacks as a senior. He finished third with 57 tackles, including a team-best 13 ½ for loss.
In Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play, Telfor finished second in the MIAA with six sacks in league games. He was an All-MIAA First Team selection.
Telfor helped a defense that ranked No. 1 in the MIAA in total defense at 272.8 yards per game allowed, passing yards allowed per game at 151.5, and rushing yards allowed per game at 121.3. The Flying Dutchmen also were No. 2 in scoring defense at 16.2 points allowed per league game.
