Tim Schoonveld '96 joined the Hope College staff on July 1, 2009 and became the college's first full-time director of athletics on July 1, 2019. His role includes mentoring and evaluating head coaches, promoting student-athlete development and welfare, and ensuring the college’s compliance with MIAA and NCAA regulations and reporting.

During his first 10 years working at his alma mater, Schoonveld served an assistant professor of kinesiology, co-director of athletics and associate director of the Center for Faithful Leadership at Hope.

In 2015, Schoonveld delivered the commencement address at graduation, and during the ceremony, was given the Hope Outstanding Professor Award. The H.O.P.E. award, first given in 1965, is presented by the members of the graduating class to the professor who they feel epitomizes the best qualities of the Hope College educator.

As a student at Hope, Schoonveld majored in kinesiology with a minor in political science. His college basketball career, first at Calvin and then at Hope, was ended by a series of knee surgeries.

After graduation, Schoonveld was the men's junior varsity basketball coach at Hope from 1997 until 2000 while teaching in the Zeeland public schools system. He was employed by the Holland Christian schools from 2000-09. He was named assistant principal and athletic director of Holland Christian High School in 2006. He was the girls' varsity basketball coach at Holland Christian High School for nine years. He was named the Class B coach of the year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan in 2008 after his team advanced to the state tournament semi-finals. The 2009 team made it to the quarterfinals with a school-record 21 wins.

Schoonveld received the M.A. in sports administration from Western Michigan University in 2005.

Schoonveld and his wife, Lisa (Timmer) both grew up in the Holland/Zeeland area. They have four children, Elijah, Ericka, Kenedy and Teagan. Lisa was a standout two-sport athlete at Hope, achieving All-MIAA honors in basketball and softball.
