Hope-Calvin Men's Basketball Rivalry

Through 203 games, Hope leads the all-time series 103-100.

The scoring difference between the teams is a 0.29 per game in favor of Hope. Hope has scored 13,851 points, an average of 68.23 per game. Calvin has scored 13,791 points, an average of 67.94 per game.

Since 1953 — the year Calvin joined the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association — the league champion or co-champion has been either Hope or Calvin a total of 63 times (Hope 32, Calvin 31).

Hope moved to the Richard and Helen DeVos Fieldhouse for the 2005-06 season. Hope won the first meeting 73-55 and again in a NCAA tournament game 70-67. Through the 2019-20 season, Hope is 12-12 versus Calvin at DeVos.

Calvin moved to its new Van Noord Arena for the 2008-09 season. The teams split two games played there in the inaugural year, Calvin by 63-62 in the regular season matchup and Hope by 69-59 in the championship game of the MIAA conference tournament. The Hope record at Van Noord is 9-11.

Calvin owns a 3-2 advantage when the game is played on a neutral floor. The most recent neutral floor game occurred in 2007 with Hope defeating Calvin 80-64 in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Aurora, Ill.

The January 29, 1997 game at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids, a 70-56 Hope triumph, established an NCAA Division III single-game attendance record with a capacity crowd of 11,442.

The series started in 1920-21 with a 31-13 Hope victory.

Calvin once defeated Hope 22 consecutive times (1969-70 until the second game in 1979-80). Hope's longest winning streak was 10 games (from the start of 1994-95 through 1997-98 season).

Hope's largest advantage in the series was 17 games (ending in 67-68) while Calvin's largest advantage was 10 games (ending in 1993-94).

After the 1968-69 season, Hope held a 16-win advantage in the series. Calvin won the next 22 games to go ahead in the series by six games. Since then (through the 2012-13 season), the series lead has exchanged hands five times -- 85-86 Hope, 89-90 Calvin, 2006-07 Hope, 2006-07 Calvin and 2007-08 Hope.

The Rivalry has been tied eight times -- 1976-77 (after 88th game, 44-44), 1984-85 (106th game, 53-53), 1988-89 (116th game, 58-58), 1997-98 (140th game, 70-70), 1998-99 (142nd game, 71-71), 2006-07 (162nd game, 81-81), 2006-07 (164th game, 82-82), and 2006-07 (166th game, 83-83).

In 1964-65, Hope beat Calvin 104-102 in the series' highest scoring game.

The series' lowest scoring game was a 26-11 Hope win in 1924-25.

Hope was the first team to score 100 points, winning 100-90 in 1954. The most points was by Calvin - 105-71 in 1964. There hasn't been a 100-point game since 1972 when Calvin won, 102-89.

Hope's biggest margin of victory was 54-20 in 1921-22.

Calvin's biggest margin of victory was 85-43 in 1951-52.

The teams met a record five times in 2006-07. Hope won the series 3-2 in the most unusual way. Hope defeated Calvin twice on the Knights' home floor and Calvin defeated Hope twice in games at DeVos Fieldhouse. The fifth-game "rubber match" was played on a neutral floor in Aurora, Ill. with Hope prevailing 80-64 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The teams met twice in the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Classic. Hope has won both games on Calvin's court, 76-54 in 2006 and 79-76 in 2009. The Classic is now designed to avoid a Hope/Calvin game.

The teams have met 18 times in the MIAA tournament since it began in 1992. The Flying Dutchmen own a 10-8 advantage and are 8-5 when the game determined the tournament champion.

The teams have met six times in the NCAA Tournament with Calvin winning four of the six -- 92-90 OT in 1987, 95-68 in 1990, 84-79 OT in 1991 and 91-88 in 1992. Hope posted back-to-back victories in 2006 (70-67) and 2007 (80-64).

There have been 12 overtime games with Hope holding a 6-6 advantage.

Hope coach Greg Mitchell versus Calvin (since 2014-15) is 5-10. 

Calvin coach Bill Sall versus Hope (beginning 2019-20) is 2-0.

Hope hosted Calvin at the Holland Civic Center for 51 years (1954-55 thru 2004-05), Hope claimed a 31-24 advantage.

Calvin owned a 33-16 advantage in games played at the Calvin College (Knollcrest) Fieldhouse from 1965-66 thru 2007-08. Hope won the final game at Knollcrest between the teams on 1/26/08 by 79-76.
