Ice Hockey Sweeps Northwood To Open ACHA Season

Forwards Allan Hirsch and Colin Stecco both registered hat tricks as the Hope College hockey team opened the 2019-20 American Collegiate Hockey Association season with an 11-3 and 7-3 sweep of Northwood University in Midland, Michigan this weekend.

On Friday, Hirsch led the Flying Dutchmen to an 11-3 victory. The junior scored three times in a span of 1 1/2 minutes early in the third period. He also finished the game with one assist.

Hope jumped out to a 5-0 first-period lead behind goals from five different players.

Freshman forward Gabe Gunneson, senior defenseman Skylar Miller and senior defensemen Caleb Wortz all recorded three-assist games.

On Saturday, Stecco gave the Flying Dutchmen a 3-1 lead with 3:37 left in the first period. He tacked on two more goals during the second period.

Hirsch chipped in three assists.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Friday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the home opener against Indiana Tech at Griff's Icehouse West in Holland Township.
