Baseball Earns Split With Calvin Thanks To Codey Houts Homer

Catcher Codey Houts belted his first home run of the season to help the Hope College baseball open Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play with a doubleheader split against visiting Calvin College on Saturday at Boeve Stadium.

Houts, pictured, delivered a fifth-inning blast for a 1-0 victory in Game 1. The Knights used a fifth-inning rally in Game 2 for a 3-1 victory.

The two teams will complete their series Monday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Calvin.

In Game 1, pitchers Connor Grimes of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven) and CJ Otteman of Zeeland, Michigan (East) combined to shut out the Knights on four hits.

Grimes started and scattered three hits and one walk over 5 ⅔ innings. He struck out two.

Otteman recorded the final four outs for his first save for Hope (3-9, 1-1 MIAA).

Houts, a senior from Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth with his second career home run.

In Game 2, Calvin (3-9, 1-1 MIAA) received a decisive, two-run double from third baseman Nate DeZwaan in the fifth to extend its lead to 3-0.
