The top of the order combined for nine hits and eight RBI to propel the Hope College baseball team to a 9-2 victory at Olivet on Friday.
The Flying Dutchmen bounced back after a three-run Olivet ninth sent the Flying Dutchmen to a 4-3 loss in the Game 1 of the doubleheader.
The two teams are scheduled to complete their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series on Monday at Hope with a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Saturday's games were postponed due to weather.
In Game 2, leadoff batter and centerfielder Evan Maday of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Kentwood) homered and scored three runs.
No. 2 hitter and shortstop Jordon Fairchild of Muskegon, Michigan (Oakridge) doubled and singled twice. He finished with three RBI and one run scored.
No. 3 hitter and rightfielder Mason Opple of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville), pictured, singled twice and collected two RBI. He also scored one run.
Cleanup hitter and third baseman Danny Carrasco of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian) had three hits and two RBI.
Winning pitcher Sam Balke of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern) scattered four hits and two walks over 5 ⅓ innings. Balke (2-1) gave up two runs - one was earned. He struck out five.
In Game 1, Olivet's Aaron Gillespie hit a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch in a three-run seventh.
Hope built a 3-1 lead on a two-run Opple homer in the third and leftfielder Nick Lepore of Clinton Township, Warren DeLaSalle scoring on a fielding error. The Flying Dutchmen left nine runners on base.
Starting pitcher Connor Grimes of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven) allowed one run on seven hits over six innings of work. Grimes, who received a no-deicision, struck out two.
Hope is now 5-11 on the season and 3-3 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play
