Three-hit, two-RBI games from first baseman Landon Brower and shortstop Jordon Fairchild weren't enough for the Hope College baseball in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament-opening loss at Alma College on Wednesday.
The Flying Dutchmen fell 10-8 after the second-seeded Scots scored the final three runs of the scheduled nine-inning game.
Third-seeded Hope (16-23 overall) faces a 2 p.m. elimination game against fourth-seeded Calvin College on Thursday at top-seeded Adrian College. The Bulldogs will host the remainder of the MIAA Tournament.
The Flying Dutchmen rallied from a 3-0 deficit after three innings and a 7-6 deficit after six to take a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
Alma (24-17) struck for the go-ahead runs with a two-run triple by Max Trucks. He later scored on a groundout.
In Hope's at-bat in the eighth, Fairchild, pictured at right, broke a 7-7 tie with an RBI double. The junior from Muskegon, Michigan (Oakridge HS) also had a run-scoring double during a two-run fifth.
Brower, a senior from Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian), pictured above left, contributed run-scoring singles in the fifth and a two-run sixth.
Leftfielder Jonathan Sojka of Glen Ellyn, Illinois (Glenbard West), scored twice for the Flying Dutchmen.
