by Alan Babbitt

Eight Hope College football student-athletes have made the 2020 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.

Defensive end Jake Babb, safety David Bos, wide receiver Christian Bos, linebacker Mason Dekker, safety Nick Holt, quarterback Mason Opple, defensive lineman Joe Romano and center Zach Smith all represent the Flying Dutchmen.

On the field, Hope's honorees last fall helped the Flying Dutchmen post the second nine-win season in team history with a 9-2 overall record in 2019. Hope went 7-0 in league play for the team's 21st league championship all-time and its fifth NCAA playoff appearance.

The National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers, completed their final year of playing eligibility in 2019 or were graduated players, who have remaining eligibility but will not return to collegiate play and had been Been starters or significant contributors throughout the 2019 season. Schools nominated their players for consideration.

"We are pleased to honor another impressive group of athletes as part of this year's Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "For more than a decade, the Hampshire Honor Society has served as a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives."
Founded in 1947 with early leadership from General Douglas MacArthur, legendary Army coach Earl "Red" Blaik and immortal journalist Grantland Rice, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame is a non-profit educational organization that runs programs designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in young people.
