Dante Hawkins made his impact felt for the Hope College men's basketball team after watching from the bench more than usual during the first half again Adrian because of foul trouble.
The response from the junior guard from Holland, Michigan (Holland HS) sparked the Flying Dutchmen to a 75-65 win at DeVos Fieldhouse on Wednesday that gave them sole possession of first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings.
Hawkins scored 16 of his 18 points after halftime on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 3-point attempts, and 3-of-4 shooting from the foul line.
Hope (12-4 overall) outscored Adrian 39-29 after halftime to improve its MIAA record to 5-0.
The Flying Dutchmen retained the league lead outright after Calvin suffered its first league loss at Kalamazoo on Wednesday.
Senior forward Harrison Blackledge of Canton, Ohio (Hoover) led Hope with 21 points and nine rebounds. He went 11-of-15 from the foul line.
Senior guard Chad Carlson of Rockford, Michigan (Rockford) chipped in 15 points on 5-of-7 3-pointers, including one just before halftime that evened the score at 36-36.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Kalamazoo.
