A penalty kick 33 seconds into the first overtime handed the Hope College men's soccer team a 3-2 loss to Adrian College on Tuesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
The Flying Dutchmen slipped into a second-place tie with Adrian in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings. Both teams are 4-2-1 in league play.
After a scoreless first half, Hope (5-5-1 overall) forced overtime by answering each of Adrian's goals during the second half.
Junior Christian Dault of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) pulled the Flying Dutchmen even at 1-1 when he headed in his team-leading fifth goal of the season 11 minutes, 59 seconds into the second half.
Junior Ryan Woodside of Bloomington, Illinois (Normal Community) set up White to earn his second assist on the season.
Adrian (5-4-1 overall) struck again 2 ½ minutes later. The Bulldogs held the lead until 7:43 remaining in regulation when sophomore Dalton Bruso of Bloomington, Illinois (Normal Community) buried his first goal of the season into the net.
Adrian, however, capitalized on a Hope foul in the box shortly into the first 10-minute overtime period. Zach Combs converted a game-ending penalty kick.
