Steve Binnig converted a second-half corner kick to boost the Hope College men's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory against Olivet College on Tuesday.
The junior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (North Allegheny HS), pictured, broke a tie score 14 ½ minutes into the second half with his first goal of the season.
Sophomore Dalton Bruso of Bloomington, Illinois (Normal Community) recorded the assist — his fourth of the season.
The Flying Dutchmen improved to 6-6-2 overall and 5-3-2 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. They are in fourth place but within a game of second-place Adrian and third-place Kalamazoo.
Tuesday's match was played on artificial turf at Olivet High School.
Hope took a 1-0 lead 12 ½ minutes into the match. Junior Christian Dault of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven) netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from junior Sam Allbritten of Warsaw, Indiana (Warsaw).
Olivet (1-11-4, 0-7-4 MIAA) evened the score eight minutes later on a goal from Joshua Rosendale.
Hope outshot Olivet by a 19-4 margin, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The Flying Dutchmen also earned 11 corner kicks to Olivet's 2.
Goalie Stephen Wilbur of Fenton, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic) made two saves for Hope.
The Flying Dutchmen are playing three matches this week — with a makeup match at Kalamazoo on Thursday at 7 p.m. and a Senior Day match against Trine on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
