MIAA Honors & Recognitions Announced
Members of the Hope College MIAA champion tennis teams have been presented awards and recognitions by conference coaches. Both Hope teams finished on top of their respective league races. Th Flying Dutch, coached by Adam Ford, repeated as conference women's champions while the Flying Dutchmen, coached by Steve Gorno, were part of a three-way tie for the men's championship.
Senior Bobby Cawood of East Lansing (East Lansing HS) was voted the men's MIAA most valuable player. He was also named to the All-MIAA team for a third consecutive year. Teammates Parker Bussies, a junior from Zeeland (Zeeland West HS) and Jason Muller, a senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS), were named to the All-MIAA second team. Senior Kyle Kreps of Holland (Holland HS) was named the recipient of the MIAA's Allen B. Stowe Sportsmanship award. He is the 21st Hope recipient of the award, the tenth since 2000. A year ago teammate Bobby Cawood received the honor.
Flying Dutchmen Edged by Rival Calvin in Tournament (5/2/13)
This rivalry would have it no other way. In a rain-delayed match that took nearly four hours to complete, rival Calvin edged the Flying Dutchmen 5-4 in a semi-final match of the MIAA tournament on Thursday. The Calvin victory avenged a regular season loss to Hope that caused a three-way tie for the conference championship. Tied 4-4, the outcome came down to the fourth singles match. Calvin's Loukas Peterson edged Hope's Kyle Kreps in a three-set thriller, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (6-8) and 6-3. Hope ends a successful season with a 16-5 dual match record.
Hope Senior Honored by MIAA (4/30/13)
The MIAA has named Hope’s Bobby Cawood its Player of the Week for the third time this season. A senior from East Lansing (East Lansing HS), Cawood led the Flying Dutchmen to a share of the MIAA championship by winning his No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches in a 6-3 win over Calvin. He won his singles match 6-3, 6-2 and his doubles match 8-2. Cawood capped off the week by winning the “A” singles flight at the MIAA individual flight championship, avenging an earlier loss to Trine’s Caleb Knust in the finals with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. He also teamed up with teammate Jason Muller to win the “A” doubles flight with an 8-3 win over Trine. Cawood is being honored for sixth time in his career.
Flying Dutchmen Excel at First MIAA Flighted Tournament (4/27/13)
The Flying Dutchman had standout performances as they hosted the first MIAA flighted tournament. In all, Hope crowned four flight champions and had two runner up finishes in the two doubles and three singles flights as the Flying Dutchmen dominated play from start to finish. In the "A" flight doubles final, the senior duo of Bobby Cawood and Jason Muller defeated Trine 8-3 on Saturday to earn the right to be called MIAA Doubles Champions. In the "A" flight consolation finals, seniors Kyle Kreps and Davis Vanderveen defeated Kalamazoo for the first time in their careers and walked away with fifth place. In "B" flight doubles, Cody Herbruck and Chris Tippett lost in the semi finals but came back to defeat Calvin 8-2 to earn a third place finish. In the "B" flight consolation finals, Matt Culver and senior Dan Owens defeated Albion for a fifth place finish. In the "A" flight singles final, senior Bobby Cawood was looking for another individual conference championship and got it by defeating Caleb Knust of Trine, who had defeated him earlier in the season, by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Bobby is only the second Hope player to ever win both singles and doubles championships in the same season (Andy Phillips 2003) and the first to ever achieve this distinction by winning the top singles and doubles draws. In the "B" flight singles final, it was an all-Hope affair as seniors Jason Muller and Kyle Kreps battled it out. In the end, Jason Muller walked away victorious with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over his teammate. The "C" singles final also pitted two Hope players against each other as sophomores Cody Herbruck and Jon Panzer played for the title. Jon Panzer won the match by a score of 6-3, 6-0.
Flying Dutchmen Claim Title Share With Win Over Rival (4/23/13)
The drama-filled MIAA men's tennis season came to an exciting conclusion Tuesday when the Flying Dutchmen defeated rival Calvin to force a three-way tie for this year's championship. Coach Steve Gorno's Dutchmen posted a 6-3 victory over the visiting Knights to create the three-way tie. Hope, Calvin and Kalamazoo each went 5-1 in conference dual matches.
A Calvin victory would have given the Knights sole possession of the league crown and ended Kalamazoo's unprecedented 74-year-long string of championships. The championship is the third in Hope men's tennis history albeit shared on each occasion -- 1962 with Kalamazoo, 2003 with Kalamazoo and now 2013 with Calvin and Kalamazoo.
Tuesday's match was forced indoors because of the inclement weather. The DeWitt Tennis Center was filled with enthusiastic fans for yet another Rivalry Showdown. The Flying Dutchmen got off to a fast start sweeping the three doubles matches by impressive margins -- 8-2, 8-3, 8-4. The teams split the six singles matches with the clincher coming at the sixth flight by sophomore Jonathan Panzer.
Shutout Victory Keeps Flying Dutchmen in MIAA Title Hunt (4/20/13)
The stage is set for one of the most exciting finishes in the history of MIAA men's tennis. On Saturday the Flying Dutchmen put themselves in a position to gain a share of a conference championship. The 9-0 victory over Adrian puts coach Steve Gorno's Dutchmen at 4-1 in the MIAA standings. Calvin (5-0) tops the standings while perennial champion Kalamazoo shares second place with Hope. Calvin visits Hope on Tuesday. A Calvin victory would end Kalamazoo's long streak of conference championships that extends back to 1935! A Hope victory would create a three-way tie for the league title. Saturday's win put the Flying Dutchmen at 15-4 overall.
Flying Dutchmen Keep Pace in MIAA with Win (4/17/13)
The Flying Dutchmen kept pace in the MIAA race by posting a 7-2 victory over visiting Albion on Wednesday. Coach Steve Gorno's Flying Dutchmen stand 3-1 in the MIAA trailing Calvin (4-0) and Kalamazoo (4-1) with one week remaining in the regular season. The Flying Dutchmen travel to Adrian on Saturday and will host rival Calvin next Tuesday. Senior Bobby Cawood achieve a milestone as he became just the sixth Hope male tennis player to record 50 career singles victories. He now has a 50-12 career singles mark. The alltime leader is Ron Visscher who was 62-22 from 1966-69.
Hope Senior Honored a Fifth Time in Career (4/16/13)
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Hope senior Bobby Cawood its Player of the Week in men’s tennis. A senior from East Lansing (East Lansing HS), Cawood won all three of his matches at No. 1 singles and posted a 3-1 mark at No. 1 doubles for the Flying Dutchmen during the week. He posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory against defending MIAA champion Kalamazoo, then won both his singles matches and all three doubles matches at the MIAA-NCAC Challenge in leading Hope to three consecutive victories, helping the MIAA win the challenge 5-4. Cawood is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and fifth time in his career.
Flying Dutchmen Go Unbeaten to Win Challenge (4/13/13)
The Flying Dutchmen put an exclamation point on the MIAA/NCAC Challenge by defeating Wabash in dominating fashion 5-0 on Saturday. With the win, the MIAA won the tournament by a final score of 5-4. Hope got on top of the Little Giants early by sweeping the three doubles matches and then senior Jason Muller and sophomore Jon Panzer closed things out by winning their singles matches in straight sets. In all, Hope lost only 14 games in one of their most dominant wins of the season. Hope went 3-0 in the Challenge to improve to 13-4 on the season.
Flying Dutchmen Suffer First Conference Defeat (4/9/13)
The Flying Dutchmen suffered their first conference loss Tuesday bowing to defending MIAA champion Kalamazoo 8-1. Coach Steve Gorno's Dutchman are 2-1 in league dual matches and 10-4 overall. Hope's only point was scored at first singles by senior Bobby Cawood.
Flying Dutchmen Suffer Non-League Defeat (4/4/13)
The Flying Dutchmen were defeated by host Aquinas 8-1. Hope fought hard in the singles extending three matches to third sets. The lone Hope victor was Jon Panzer at #6 singles. Coach Steve Gorno's Dutchmen have a 10-3 season record.
Flying Dutchmen Stay Unbeaten in MIAA Play (4/3/13)
The Flying Dutchmen remained undefeated in conference play by posting a 6-3 victory at Trine on Wednesday. Coach Steve Gorno's Dutchmen are 2-0 in MIAA dual matches and 10-2 overall.
Flying Dutchmen Celebrate New Courts With Victory (3/30/13)
The Flying Dutchmen celebrated their new tennis stadium courts in opening conference play with an 8-1 victory over Alma on Saturday. Earlier, in a match played indoors because of the cold temperature. coach Steve Gorno's Dutchmen topped Grand Rapids Community College 8-1. Over the course of the matches, 10 different Hope players contributed singles or doubles wins to help the Flying Dutchmen take their season record to 9-2.
Flying Dutchmen Go Unbeaten in Florida (3/22/13)
The Flying Dutchmen capped off an undefeated spring break week in Florida by defeating the University of Massachusettes at Boston 8-1 on Friday. Winning both singles and doubles matches for Hope were Bobby Cawood, Davis Vanderveen, and Jason Muller. TJ Brogan also picked up his first collegiate singles victory. Hope went 5-0 in their spring break matches and will enter the regular season with a 7-2 record.
Flying Dutchmen Post Two Victories in Florida (3/21/13)
The Flying Dutchmen posted a pair of wins on Thursday in Florida. Coach Steve Gorno's Dutchmen opened with yet another one-point decision edging rnaked Grinnell, Iowa 5-4 and then coasted past North Central, Ill. 9-0. Hope has a 6-2 season record. Hope's seniors tepped-up in the Grinnell win. In what is becoming the norm, the Dutchmen fell behind 2-1 after doubles play with the only victory coming at the top spot. Seniors Bobby Cawood and Gabe Casher defeated the #1 doubles team of Elliott Czarnecki and Emilio Gomez of Grinnell 8-6. In singles play, seniors Bobby Cawood and Jason Muller remained unbeaten on the spring trip by defeating their opponents in straight sets. Senior Davis Vanderveen picked up a huge victory for the Dutchmen at #5 singles defeating Tracy Johnson 7-6, 6-4. That set the table for senior Kyle Kreps as the last man on the court with the teams tied 4-4. Kreps was down 3-0 in the deciding set before storming back with some inspired play to defeat C.J. Ray 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to seal the victory. In the North Central match freshmen Ben Johnson and Chris Tippett scored their first collegiate singles victories.
Flying Dutchmen Win Another Close One (3/19/13)
For the fourth straight match, the Flying Dutchmen were involved in a one-point decision, this time edging UW-Oshkosh 5-4 on Tuesday in Florida. Parker Bussies and Jason Muller continued their winning ways by winning 8-3 to give Hope their only point in doubles play. But in singles play, it was like watching a rerun of the previous day as Bobby Cawood, Jason Muller, Kyle Kreps, and Jon Panzer all pulled out straight set victories to give Hope the narrow team victory. A second scheduled match against Southeastern Florida was rained out midway through the competition and will not be rescheduled.
Flying Dutchmen Win By a Point in Spring Break Debut (3/17/13)
The Flying Dutchmen kicked off their spring trip to Florida with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Hobart, N.Y. on Monday. The Hope tandem of Jason Muller and Parker Bussies defeated Peter Cruice and Luke DeLuccia 8-4 for the lone victory in doubles as Hope fell behind 2-1. In singles play, seniors Bobby Cawood, Kyle Kreps, and Jason Muller got straight set victories to tie the match at 4-4. And for the second time in this young season, sophomore Jon Panzer pulled out the narrow victory for the Dutchmen in a third set super-tiebreaker, defeating Ben Robinson 6-1, 4-6, (11-9). It marked the third 5-4 match of the young season.
Flying Dutchmen Suffer One-Point Loss to Davenport (3/13/13)
In their final indoor match of the pre-season, the Flying Dutchmen were defeated by Davenport 5-4. Hope jumped out to an early lead in the doubles by takinig two of three matches. However, Davenport came back to tie the team match at 4-4 with only #3 singles left on the court. Senior Jason Muller was unable to pull out the victory for Hope bowing in three sets to Zach Chambers 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Winning two matches apiece for Hope were senior Kyle Kreps and junior Parker Bussies.
Flying Dutchmen Win Two-of-Three at Indoor Invitational
The Flying Dutchmen won two of three matches in hosting an indoor invitational this weekend. On Friday coach Steve Gorno's Flying Dutchmen bowed to nationally ranked Case Western, Ohio 7-2. The Flying Dutchmen swept a pair of Saturday matches defeating Ohio Northern 6-3 and Elmhurst, Ill. 5-4. Hope has a 2-1 dual match record.
The Flying Dutchmen saved their best for last by pulling a come-from-behind victory over Elmhurst. After losing two of the three doubles matches, Hope stormed back in the singles to win 4-of-6 matches. Down 4-3 in the team match, senior Jason Muller pulled out a three-set victory 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to square the match at 4-4. The final match on the court went the distance as well as sophomore Jon Panzer pulled out a thrilling third set tiebreaker victory 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) to give the Dutchmen the win.
Flying Dutchmen Open Season With West Michigan Collegiate Action (2/16/13)
The Flying Dutchmen opened their season this weekend competing in the West Michigan Tournament featuring the small college tennis programs in the area. The non-scoring indoor tournament was played at the Orchard Hills Swim & Tennis Club in Ada.
