The Hope College men's tennis team was edged 5-4 by Hobart in a nonleague match Monday in Orlando, Florida that featured a trio of three-set singles matches.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Carter Smiley of Minnetonka, Minnesota (Minnetonka) topped David Reinharz 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
At No. 6 singles, junior Justin Folkert of Hamilton, Michigan (Hamilton) rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory against Harry Nichols.
In doubles play, the Flying Dutchmen took two flights.
At No. 2 doubles, junior Mark VanderStoep of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) teamed with sophomore Danny Kroeze of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) won 8-3 against Walker Anderson and Jonathan Atwater.
At No. 3 doubles, Folkert paired with Smiley for an 8-5 victory against Harry Nichols and David Reinharz.
