A newcomer to and a veteran of Hope men's indoor track and field took different paths to the same place and are All-MIAA honorees for the 2020 season.
Freshman Zach Elmore of Cadillac, Michigan (Cadillac HS) and senior Owen Ljung of Sonoma, Calif. (Sonoma Valley HS) earned all-league honors by winning their respective events at the MIAA Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted at Trine University last weekend.
Elmore soared to win the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.35 meters (14 feet, 3 inches). It is the first time Hope has won the pole vault during the indoor season.
Ljung claimed a victory in the 800 meters, doing so after being placed in the event's slowest heat. He won by almost a full second in 1:56.83.
Said head coach Kevin Cole of the two awardees:
"Owen has been a dominant force in the 800m from the first time he ran for us in a meet. He had to come out of the slow heat because he had been injured and didn't have a previous time this year which makes his victory even more impressive.
"Zach had a great day vaulting and it will be a lot of fun to watch him get even better over the next four years. To be doing so well in such a technical event as a freshman is especially impressive. He is part of a strong pole-vaulting group that should continue to be a strength of the team."
