Second baseman Sierra Mutschler's grand slam capped a 2-0 and 11-1 sweep for the Hope College softball team against visiting Olivet on Thursday.
The sophomore from Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS) went 4-for-4 with a double and a career-high six RBI during the second game that ended after five innings due to the mercy-run rule.
Hope (15-11 overall) raised its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association record to 5-3.
Mutschler's second home of the season finished off a seven-run rally in the top of the third. She leads the Flying Dutch with 25 RBI and a .361 batting average.
First baseman Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer HS) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Dorr, Michigan (Wayland HS) added three runs and two hits. Rightfielder Sammi Adams of Griffith, Indiana (Griffth HS) also had two hits.
Winning pitcher Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids HS) tossed a two-hit complete game. She struck out seven and walked one.
Jones scattered three hits and one walk over 5 1/3 innings. She struck out nine one day after fanning a career-high 12 at Kalamazoo.
Singer retired all five batters she faced for the save.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, April 16 with a Hometown Week doubleheader presented by Lorence & VanderZwart against Albion. First pitch at Wolters Stadium is 1 p.m. There will be a free team poster giveaway thanks to the support of Schreur Printing.
