Second baseman Sierra Mutschler battled for 13 pitches in her final at-bat before blasting a clutch home run that completed a two-win day for the Hope College softball team.
The junior from Wayland, Michigan (Wayland HS) gave the Flying Dutch a 3-2 win against No. 8-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire with her tiebreaking solo blast in the top of the sixth inning on Monday in Clermont, Florida.
Hope is now 5-1 on the season after defeating Allegheny 7-2 and Eau Claire Monday.
Mutschler's leadoff homer was her first of the season and the 13th of her career. She's tied for seventh place all-time at Hope with Julie Sobieski (2013-15) and Abby Phillips (2008-11).
The Flying Dutch rallied from a 2-0, first-inning deficit on a fourth-inning RBI double from designated player Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland) that plated first baseman Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) and a fifth-inning squeeze bunt from rightfielder Amanda Diaz of Round Lake, Illinois (Mundelein) that scored shortstop Katrina Ellis of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich).
Winning pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East) scattered five hits and three walks over seven innings.
Jones (3-0) struck out six to hand Eau Claire just its second loss in 11 games.
Against Allegheny, Hope erupted for a 4-1 lead with a four-run second that was capped by a two-run triple from Pinhey.
Singer (2-0) earned the win on the mound after six hits and two runs over four innings. Freshman Shelby Steele of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Eaton Rapids) went the final three innings for her first save.
Hope returns to action on Tuesday, March 21 with games against Bowdoin and Babson.
