Catcher Hayley Reitsma kept launching the ball all over Wolters Stadium for the Hope College softball team.
A school-record performance in Game 2 against Albion propelled the 23rd-ranked Flying Dutch to a sweep in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener.
Reitsma homered twice and tripled twice — going 4-for-4 with six RBIs in a 9-0 win that upped Hope's record to 16-3 overall. The Flying Dutch won the opener 8-0 in five innings.
She finished with a team-record 14 total bases. The senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian) surpassed the old mark of 10 set by Julie Sobieski in 2014 against Calvin.
Reitsma's two home runs equaled the school record shared by multiple players, including teammate Katie Singer in the Flying Dutch's last game on March 29 against Manchester, Indiana.
Singer earned the win on the mound with five innings of work. The senior from Howell, Michigan (Howell) combined with reliever Tena Baar of Byron Center, Michigan (Byron Center) on the shut out. Singer struck out five while yielding four hits and one walk.
In Game 1, Mutschler led the Hope attack by going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Reitsma and centerfielder Noelle Jackson of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Grand Blanc) both went 2-for-3. Reitsma had a triple.
Winning pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (South Lyon) fired a two-hit shutout. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
