Softball's Record-Setting Day Leads To Sweep Of Adrian, MIAA Tournament Spot

A record-setting day propelled the 14th-ranked Hope College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Adrian College and into next week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

Catcher Hayley Reitsma set an MIAA record for home runs in league play with a homer in each of the Flying Dutch's 2-0 and 7-0 victories Saturday in the regular season finale. She also added to her school-record home run total for the season.

Pitcher Sydney Jones equaled her school record with 17 strikeouts in Game 1 against the Bulldogs.

Hope (25-8 overall) clinched the No. 3 seed for the league tournament at top-seeded Saint Mary's after finishing with an 11-5 league record. The Flying Dutch will open the double-elimination NCAA Division III Championship qualifier against second-seeded Calvin at 11 a.m.

In Game 1, Reitsma, pictured at right, gave Jones, her batterymate, all the offense she needed with a two-out homer in the top of the first.

Jones, pictured at left, tossed a two-hit shutout - her seventh this season and her 22nd all-time, a school record.

The senior righthander from South Lyon, Michigan (East HS) matched her strikeout performance from last season against Adrian. She did not walk a batter.

Shortstop Savannah Dixon of Niles, Michigan (Edwardsburg) added an RBI double in the fourth.

In Game 2, Jones started a doubleheader for the first time this season and yielded just three baserunners over five innings.

Jones (14-3) struck out seven, gave up two hits and walked one.

Hope jumped ahead quickly, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and four times in the second.

Reitsma, from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian) slugged a three-run homer in the fourth - giving her an MIAA record 11 in league play and a school-record 13 already this season.

Dixon hit a solo homer in the fourth - her third home run of the season.

Jones now has 162 strikeouts this season and a school-record 644 for her Hope career.

The Flying Dutch eliminated Adrian (16-20, 8-8 MIAA) from postseason contention. Alma earned the fourth and final spot in the MIAA Tournament.
