Women's Basketball Marches Past Heidelberg In Tip-Off Tournament Opener

The Hope College women's basketball team delivered its highest-scoring season opener in a 105-50 victory against Heidelberg, Ohio on Friday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The nationally ranked Flying Dutch received points from 12 different players, including six who reached double figures.

Hope advanced to face Rose Hulman Institute of Technology (1-0) in Saturday's 3 p.m. championship game.

The Flying Dutch never trailed against Heidelberg (0-1) and built a 26-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Hope's starters combined for 47 points. Junior forward Francesca Buchanan of Grant, Michigan (Sparta HS) and freshman guard Kenedy Schoonveld of Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian) scored 13 points apiece. Buchanan also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Senior guard Madison Geers of Scottville, Michigan (Mason County Central) also reached double figures with 12 points.

The 105 games are the second-most by the Flying Dutch at DeVos Fieldhouse. They came within two of matching the 2013 record from a 107-61 win against Alma College.

Freshman center Olivia Voskuil of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) chipped in 14 points off the bench.

Freshman center Ashleigh Thomas of Shelby Township, Michigan (Lutheran North) added 12 points, while sophomore forward Kayla Russell of Clarkston, Michigan (Clarkston) totaled a career-high 10 points.

Rose Hulman defeated Finlandia 78-31 in Friday's first game. Ally and Abby Bromenschenkel topped Rose Hulman with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
