Women's Basketball Downs Calvin In The Rivalry, Remains Unbeaten

Francesca Buchanan heard the yell from her Hope College bench for a timeout, but astutely ignored it after teammate Kenedy Schoonveld found her open under the basket.

You don't pass on an easy layup in a tight game.

Buchanan's last of a game-high 19 points sealed a 58-51 victory against Calvin College in the 119th game of The Rivalry Saturday in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 2,612.

The Flying Dutch — ranked No. 2 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll and No. 3 by D3hoops.com — improved to 16-0 overall and 7-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Buchanan's basket off the Schoonveld assist gave Hope a 56-51 lead with 1 minute, 8 seconds remaining. Two free throws from Lauren Newman closed the scoring for the Flying Dutch, who held the Knights scoreless for the final 2 ½ minutes.

Buchanan's double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds topped Hope. She matched her season-high in scoring while also recording her fourth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.

Madison Geers chipped in 12 points for the Flying Dutch.

Calvin (10-6, 5-2 MIAA) had three players score in double figures: Bre Luurtsema with 18 points, Ali Spayde with 15, and Rachel Warners with 10.

Calvin leads the all-time series 71-48, but the Flying Dutch are 33-15 against the Knights since 2000.
