by Alan Babbitt

The Hope College women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season with a 1-0 defeat at Wheaton College (Illinois) in a matchup of nationally ranked teams.

The Flying Dutch could not answer after yielding a goal eight minutes into the non-league match following a restart.

Avea Garber's fourth goal of the season stood up and dropped Hope to 8-1-1 on the season.

"Wheaton played well," head coach Leigh Sears said. "Their coach said they have been struggling the past few matches. They came out and went after it. They beat us to balls in the air. They outworked us a little bit. Credit to them."

Goalie Jordanne Ellingboe of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven HS) made six saves for the Flying Dutch.

Wheaton (9-2 overall) outshot Hope 16-3. Goalie Lauren Ketchum finished with two saves for the Thunder.

Earlier in the day, the Flying Dutch moved up to fourth in the D3soccer.com poll and to ninth in the United Soccer Coaches rankings. Wheaton was 13th in the United Soccer Coaches poll and 14th in the D3soccer.com rankings.
