Hope Women's Tennis Defeats Olivet, Closes In On MIAA Championship

The 26th-ranked Hope College women's tennis team inched closer to at least a share of a MIAA championship on Friday by sweeping Olivet 9-0 at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.

Coach Adam Ford's Flying Dutch (16-4 overall) can claim a league title on Saturday with a noon match at Adrian. Hope is 6-0 in league play with two matches remaining.

Senior Carli Capestany of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS), moved into a second-place in the Flying Dutch's all-time doubles records with her 73rd doubles win.

Capestany paired with junior Marie Holaway of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS), for an 8-1 win against Olivet's Haley Powers/BreAnne Rudlaff at No. 2 doubles.

Capestany's career record is 73-29. She joins Audrey Coates (1994-97), Becky Lucas (1994-97) and Katherine Garcia (2008-11) in second. Jennifer Smith holds the record with 76 wins between 1997-2000.

Capestany also won at No. 1 singles against Olivet's Maddy Drikakis 6-3, 6-2 for her 56th singles victory. She is in 12th place in Flying Dutch history.
