The 26th-ranked Hope College women's tennis team is outright MIAA champion after winning 9-0 at Trine on Wednesday.
The Flying Dutch (18-4 overall) won all eight league matches, including seven by a 9-0 score. They will be the No. 1 seed for next week's MIAA Tournament and have home-court advantage throughout the four-team event.
Senior Carli Capestany of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS), claimed her 24th doubles win of the season and tied the school record for single-season doubles wins. She teamed with sophomore Nancy Benda of Birmingham, Michigan (Seaholm HS), for an 8-6 win against Trine's Erin Kwaske and Lexi Mack.
It also was Capestany's 75th career doubles win — second-most all-time at Hope. She trails Jennifer Smith (1997-2000) by one.
The Flying Dutch took six other flights without losing a game: Benda at No. 1 singles, junior Anna Garcia of Battle Creek, Michigan (Lakeview HS), at No. 3 singles, sophomore Paige Courts of Caledonia, Michigan (Grand Rapids South Christian HS), at No. 4 singles, freshman Natalie Rahrig of Fort Wayne, Indiana (Bishop Luers HS), at No. 6 singles, junior Claire Cooper of Williamston, Michigan (Williamston HS) and sophomore Kelly Daniel of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS) at No. 2 doubles, and junior Marie Holaway of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa HS) and Garcia at No. 3 singles.
