The 1-mile run is not Rachael Webb's usual event for the Hope College women's indoor track & field team.
She made it one.
The senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville HS) heads into Saturday's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Track & Field Champions as the school record holder in the event.
Webb's time of 5 minutes, 3.86 seconds was run earlier last week at the GVSU Tune-Up. She passed Sheri McCormack's previous school record of 5:07.70 run in 2014.
"One week prior, I had run the mile part of the distance medley relay. My coach said 'Do you want to try the mile at the next meet," Webb said, referring to Kevin Cole. "That was something for me. I gained a lot of respect for milers. You have a lot exercise a lot of patience, something I'm not as great at when I'm racing."
Webb is looking forward to competing at the MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Saturday's meet is hosted by Trine University and begins at 9:30 a.m.
"I'm really excited. I think we have a good shot of doing something really special," Webb said. "I think everyone raced so well at Grand Valley last week. I think if we show up with similar passion that we had at Grand Valley we'll be very pleased with the outcome.
"Everyone has been working so incredibly hard. I think we're set up for success."
Webb has the third-fastest time in the 1-mile among MIAA runners. She's the fastest in the league in the 600 meters with a time of 1:40.90 and second-fastest in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.47.
