The Hope College women's indoor track & field team won one event and set a school record in another Saturday en route to a runner-up finish at the University of Chicago's Windy City Invitational.
Senior Kayla Gercak of Vicksburg, Michigan (Portage Northern HS), pictured, led a sweep of the top six times in the 5,000 meters.
Freshman Jenna Breuker of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern) broke a three-year school record in the indoor shot put.
The Flying Dutch scored 99 points to place second in the 11-team event.
Breuker threw 12.03 meters in the shot put to finish second (43 feet, 3 ¾ inches). She pass Jane Pearson's 2016 mark of 11.63 meters (38-2).
Gercak, pictured, clocked a winning 5,000 winning time of 19 minutes, 45.26 seconds.
She was followed by teammates: senior Abby Couwenhoven of Mokena, Illinois (Lincoln Way East) at 19:52.14, freshman Sarah Cannon of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids) at 20:18.96, freshman Madelyn Marciniak of Otsego, Michigan (Otsego) at 21:07.84, junior Mackenzie Schmidt of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) at 21:33.56, and freshman Hannah Gray of Winfield, Illinois (Wheaton North) at 22:58.25.
Senior Emily Hamilton of Naperville, Illinois (North) clocked a second-place effort in the 3,000 meters with a run of 10:42.27.
Junior Chelsea Miskelley of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) was runner-up in the 800 meters by posting a time of 2:23.67.
Breuker came in third in the weight throw with a toss of 13.59 meters (39-5 ¾).
Junior Hannah Kenny of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grand Haven) placed fourth in the 1-mile with a run of 5:18.34.
The Flying Dutch's 4x400 relay took fourth. Junior Nicole Kruithof of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian), junior Hailey Pickelheimer of Powell, Ohio (Olentangy Liberty), VanderStoep and Miskelley recorded a time of 4:13.63.
Kenny placed fifth in the 800 meters at 2:26.30.
Junior Sally Hansma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Jenison) finished sixth in the 1-mile run with a run of 5:21.36.
Junior Mitchel Achien'g came in sixth in the pentathlon with a score of 2,085 points.
Junior Hannah Huizen of Jenison, Michigan (Jenison) finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.36 seconds.
VanderStoep placed seventh in the 400 meters with a run of 1:03.79.
Freshman Gina Polito of Hoffman Estates, Illinois (Barrington) finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 11.09 meters (36-4 ¾).
The Flying Dutch's next meet is Friday, February 15 at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up.
