Mitchel Achien'g Sets a School Record, Betters Another in First Indoor Track and Field Meet

Mitchel Achien'g set one Hope College indoor track and field record in one event and bettered her own school record in another on Friday at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open.

The senior from Nairobi, Kenya (Kisumu School) clocked a record 60-meter hurdle time of 9.22 seconds at Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Michigan.

Achien'g passed the nine-year-old mark of 9.34 held by Kara VandeGuchte. She finished 12th in the meet that featured competitors from all three NCAA divisions and NAIA.

In the triple jump, Achien'g topped her school record set last season by leaping 11.01 meters (36 feet, 1 ½ inches) and finishing eighth. Her previous best was 10.75 meters (35-3 ¼).

Achien'g also competed in the 60-meter dash and placed 23rd with a run of 8.19.

Senior Addyson Gerig of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) took 11th in the triple jump after going 10.56 meters (34-7 7/34).

Gerig came in eighth in the high jump by clearing 1.54 meters (5-0 ½).

Two Hope runners ran the 1-mile: senior Sophia Vander Kooy of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) ninth at 5:42.26 and junior Brooke Truszkowski of Traverse City, Michigan (T.C. Central) in 10th at 5:43.72.

Hope's next meet is Friday, January 17 at GVSU's Bill Clinger Classic.
